That You May Know: Explaining the Doctrine of Assurance of Salvation, and the verses in the Bible
1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
There have been arguments about what the Bible teaches on the subject of the assurance of salvation. Can believers have the assurance of salvation?
I believe that Christians are saved the moment they believe in Christ, and at that same moment, they know their fate of eternity.
In this passage of the scripture, it is very clear and plain that a man can have an assurance of his salvation. You don’t have to wait until you die before you know where you are going to spend your eternity.
Our assurance is not found in the things that we do nor is it found in the things that we pursue, but it is found in Christ alone. Our assurance is not a separate doctrine from salvation.
Our assurance is given the moment we trusted Christ alone for salvation. Knowing that you are going to Heaven is the most delightful experience in the lives of believers.
What gives us the assurance of salvation as believers.
1. The Promise of God gives believers assurance of Heaven.
John 5:24 | Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. |
What promises do we have in Christ Jesus?
John 3:16 tells us that anyone who believes will not perish, and we have everlasting. It is the moment you believe that you have eternal life.
People are confused when the eternal life begins in a man, when you have believed in Christ Jesus, you have a new life, which is the life of Christ in you.
John 3:18 tells us that anyone who believes is not condemned, but those who believe not are condemned already.
John 3:36 tells us that those who believed in Christ have eternal, eternal life is a present possession and not a future achievement.
If God cannot lie, and His word is verity, and I believe that the promises of the Lord should suffice to believe in the assurance of believer’s salvation, and the eternity of it.
Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
It is funny that many people will tell you that they know that they are going to Heaven, but they do not know how to get to Heaven.
John 6:47 explains to us that we have eternal life at that moment, and not later in life.
Therefore, if you are not still sure that you would go to Heaven, you need to come to the understanding that Christ has given us his Word and that he cannot lie.
2. The Presence of the Spirit gives us Assurance
The Spirit of the Lord is the third person of the trinity, and he also has a part to play in our salvation.
He lives within believers, and he abides there forever.
And that is why if you do not have the spirit of Christ, you are none of his.
Romans 8:14-16
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
And every believer has Holy Spirit the moment they are saved, and it is never going to leave you.
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Contrary to what so many people teach about the Holy Spirit. A believer’s body is a purchased body for the Holy Spirit to dwell and abide there forever.
And Holy Spirit is also referred to as the Spirit of Christ which denotes the presence of Christ in the lives of believers.
Therefore, the believer’s hope of heaven is found in the presence of the Holy Spirit within us.
And that is why you should never live in fear if you have truly trusted Christ to be your Savior. There is no fear because he has perfected everything.
The seal of the salvation of our salvation is unbreakable, and we are eternally secured for all of the eternality.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
If you are living in fear, you need to check whether you have the presence of Christ in you, and if you do, you think about the promises of God in His word.
3. The Power of God gives us the Assurance of Heaven.
There is nothing God cannot do apart from those that are against who he is and against his character.
When he saved us, he kept and sealed us until the day of redemption, therefore, we are not going to Hell again.
God has the power to keep those that come to him by faith, and he keeps them saved for all of eternity.
You cannot unsaved yourself from the hand of God neither would God undo your salvation if you want to unsaved yourself.
John 10:28-29 And I give unto them eternal life; they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
This is Christ speaking here to us also today, and power is so great that there is nothing too hard for him to do.
Conclusion
Apostle Believed in the Assurance of Salvation
2Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
In that passage you will come to realize that Apostle Paul declared that the reason for his assurance of Heaven, “I know whom I have believed:
Do you know him? Have you received him? Are you saved?
It is important to know that assurance of salvation is for all believers to know that when they believe in Christ, they have salvation no, and not later.
The salvation of our soul is not progressive, but instantaneous.
