What happened on Resurrection Sunday

What Really Happened on Resurrection Sunday?

Sermon Mar 21, 2026

Introduction

Resurrection Sunday stands as the foundation of the Christian faith. Without the resurrection of Jesus Christ, there would be no gospel message, no salvation, and no hope of eternal life. Understanding what happened on this day is essential for every believer.

The Bible provides a detailed account across the four Gospels. Then when these accounts are harmonized, they form a clear and powerful timeline of events that reveal both the reality and the significance of the resurrection.

Early Morning: The Women Visit the Tomb

At dawn on the first day of the week, several women came to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus with spices.

Matthew 28:1 (KJV)
“In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.”

Therefore, they came expecting to find His body, but what they encountered changed everything.

The Earthquake and the Angel

A supernatural event took place at the tomb.

Matthew 28:2 (KJV)
“And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.”

The guards were overcome with fear, and the stone was rolled away. This act was not to release Jesus, but to reveal that He had already risen.

The Tomb Is Empty

The women entered the tomb and discovered that Jesus’ body was gone.

Luke 24:3 (KJV)
“And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.”

However, angels declared the truth: He was not there because He had risen, just as He said. This, therefore, is one of the proofs that Jesus indeed resurrected from the grave.

The Women Report to the Disciples

The women left quickly to tell the disciples what they had seen.

Matthew 28:8 (KJV)
“And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.”

Therefore, their response reflected both awe and deep joy at the reality of the resurrection.

Peter and John Visit the Tomb

After hearing the report, Peter and John ran to the tomb to see for themselves.

John 20:6-7 (KJV)
The linen clothes were lying in place, and the napkin was folded separately.

This detail is significant. It shows that the body was not stolen. The resurrection was orderly, intentional, and divine.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene remained at the tomb and encountered the risen Christ.

John 20:16 (KJV)
“Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.”

She became the first person to see the risen Savior, marking a deeply personal moment in the resurrection account.

Jesus Appears to Other Followers

Later that day, Jesus appeared to multiple people.

He walked with two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24) and later appeared to His disciples.

These appearances confirm that the resurrection was witnessed and verified. How to be Born Again
