Suicide and Way to Hell: What Saith the Scripture?

Suicide is hard, and this article is in no way encouraging suicide at all. But to help find an answer to your questions.

Do People Who Commit Suicide Go to Hell?

But this has been one of the searches for questions, and people who are looking for answers may not necessarily be the ones in need of the answer, but they are asking to know whether they will see their loved ones again who lost their lives to suicide.

The Bible is our final authority, and we will let the Bible answer us on this subject of suicide and how it relates to one’s eternity.

People commit suicide because of frustration, pain, hurt, disappointment, failure, defeat, shame, regret, and many others.

People Who Committed Suicide in the Bible

Now, there are people who committed suicide in the Bible, and that is why we need to understand that there is nothing new under the sun. What we have seen today had happened before in the Bible. Do people who commit suicide go to Hell?

The answer to this question will be given in the lives of men who committed this sin in the Bible.

King Saul

Saul was the king in Israel, and then he disobey, and he lost his place of service, kingdom, and influence. So when the presence of the Lord had departed from him, he is left to himself emptied and desolate.

1 Sam 28:19Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

The verse above was before he went to the battle, and Samuel said to him, you will be with me, he didn’t go to Hell, but he will be with God in Heaven.

And let’s see his action.

1 Sam 31:4Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

SAUL COMMITTED SUICIDE!

Where did he go? Heaven or Hell according to the Bible? Heaven.

People who believed that Saul lost his salvation cannot dispute that Samuel said, Saul and his sons will be with him.

Samuel is in a comfortable place, and not in a place of torment.

Even though Saul’s action is against the Word of God, but he is in a better place right now.

It is right and Biblical to conclude that Christians who committed suicide will go to Heaven, just as we will see Saul and his sons who are with Samuel.

And let’s ask the question again, do people who commit suicide go to Heaven? Yes.

I mean those who are saved and not the unsaved. If you are not saved, and you commit suicide, you will be tormented in Hellfire.

Ahithophel

2 Sam 17:23And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

Samson

Samson made the whole building collapse on him and those wicked philistines, and even though these men are wicked people, but he also killed himself alongside them.

He committed suicide too. And in the book of Hebrews 11, he is among the heroes of faith.

Heb 11:32And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:

In the case of Samson who committed suicide and was murdered at the same time, the question is, do people who commit suicide go to Hell? No. Samson was one of the heroes of faith.

Judas Iscariot

Judas Iscariot went to Hell, not because he committed suicide, but he was the son of perdition and not a believer.

John 17:12While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

And He did not believe even though he followed Christ, saw the miracles, and even went soul winning too with other disciples, but he never believed.

This is a true picture of such a person who can be involved in religion but not saved.

John 6:64But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

Conclusion

I want to answer your question, people who committed suicide without Christ will burn forever in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone.

But those who are saved and have believed in Christ alone for salvation will never go to Hell again. Christ gave you eternal life the moment you placed your faith in Him for salvation.

John 1:12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

When a person believes in the Lord Jesus Christ, he becomes a child of God immediately, and once you are a child of God, you are always a child of God.

You cannot undo your salvation through bad works.

A very dear brother in Christ early this year(2021) committed suicide because he couldn’t cope with the tough situation that he was experiencing. I still have his image in my head every time I think about him.

He left this world, leaving his wife, and four children. Even though he is no more here, the pain of suicide will linger in the heart of his wife, and his children.

Suicide is not an option, please talk to someone about your situation.

There are people who are there to help you navigate that journey of life successfully. Regardless of whatever challenge that you might be going through, don’t give up.
